The glory and pride of being the first often overshadow the challenges, mistakes, and setbacks that inevitably follow. Add to that the noise of naysayers, the distractions of everyday life, and the constant demands of leadership, and at times the journey may seem hardly worth the hassle. The emotional and mental cost of being a trailblazer is rarely acknowledged because the focus remains on the impact of the mission and the significance of the milestone.
Yet history reminds us that meaningful change always requires courage.
The faith, sacrifice, and determination of pioneers such as Ruth Carol Taylor, Margaret Grant, Patricia Banks Edmiston, Ruby Bridges, not to mention, President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama forever altered the course of history. Their courage created opportunities that did not previously exist. They inspired progress not only for themselves, but for generations that would follow.
Where would we be without their fortitude and perseverance?
Their sacrifices, sleepless nights, and personal losses were never easy—but they were always worth it. Because of them, the stage has been set for others to lead, to thrive, and to walk through doors that were once firmly closed. We owe it to these change-makers to carry the torch forward and continue championing the causes they helped ignite.
Nothing worth fighting for has ever come easily.
Like many pioneers before us, Sigma Kappa Psi has faced its own challenges. We have had to pivot, adapt, and strengthen our foundation to reinforce our mission. Difficult tasks come with the territory of leadership. You do not become the first—or the standard by which others are measured—by playing small or settling for average.
There are moments in every journey where we must stop and straighten our crown. Straightening the crown is not the problem; it is when the crown falls that true challenges begin. That is why sisterhood matters.
Sigma Kappa Psi was founded in solidarity—for Black women in aviation who were once denied the opportunity to soar in this profession. We are here to grow both professionally and personally, and to uplift our fellow sisters in flight. Our commitment is to excellence in everything we do: our appearance, our speech, our interactions, our communication, and the value we bring to the spaces we occupy.
Our standard is excellence because our mission demands it.
We represent Angels. Angels serve as intermediaries—guides that bridge heaven and earth, offering protection, wisdom, and direction. In the same spirit, we aim to guide, uplift, and support one another as we navigate the skies and the journeys of our lives.
As we prepare to celebrate another Founder’s Day, we step into a new season—one filled with meaningful connections, greater community impact, and powerful collaboration.
Sigma Kappa Psi will continue to lead as the first aviation sorority dedicated to flight attendants.
And one thing is certain:
The Angels are coming!!!!
