The holidays are often painted as a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration, but for flight attendants, the season can look a bit different. Instead of sitting around the table with loved ones, we might find ourselves at 35,000 feet, navigating busy airports, delayed flights, and holiday rush stress. It’s a reality of our profession, but it doesn’t mean we have to feel isolated or disconnected.
The Mental Health Challenge of Flying During the Holidays
Being away from home during the holidays can be emotionally taxing. The absence of familiar faces, traditions, and the comfort of home can weigh heavy on anyone, but it’s especially tough when you’re also working long shifts and dealing with heightened passenger stress. Add to that the longing for family moments that you might miss, and it’s easy to feel disconnected from the holiday spirit.
However, just because you’re in the air or away from home doesn’t mean you can’t create meaningful moments and stay grounded in the spirit of the season.
Ways to Stay Connected to Your Sigma Kappa Psi Sisters
One of the greatest gifts of being part of Sigma Kappa Psi is the sisterhood we share. Even when you’re far from home, your sisters are just a call, text, or video chat away. Here are some ways to lean on your sorority family during the holiday season:
Virtual Check-Ins: Schedule a group video call with your line sisters. Share how you’re spending the holidays, swap stories, and even celebrate virtually.
Holiday Gift Exchange: Organize a small gift exchange within the sisterhood. Opening a thoughtful gift from a sister can make you feel cherished even when you’re miles apart.
Support Threads: Use your group chats or the Sigma Kappa Psi online platform to post daily updates, words of encouragement, or just check in with one another.
Create New Traditions: Start a holiday tradition unique to your sisterhood, like wearing matching socks on a layover or watching the same holiday movie in different cities.
Tips for Self-Care During the Holidays
While staying connected is vital, taking care of yourself is just as important. Here are a few ways to prioritize your mental health:
Pack a Piece of Home: Bring a small token from home, like a family photo or your favorite holiday candle, to create a sense of comfort wherever you are.
Practice Gratitude: Take a moment each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for, whether it’s your supportive sisters, a smooth flight, or a friendly crew.
Find Moments of Joy: Treat yourself to a festive coffee at the airport or wear holiday socks under your uniform—small acts of cheer can make a big difference.
Unplug When Needed: Give yourself permission to step away from social media if seeing others celebrate starts to feel overwhelming.
You’re Never Truly Alone
As a Sigma Angel, you have a sisterhood that spans airports, cities, and time zones. The holidays might not always be traditional for us, but they can still be meaningful. Remember, your sisters are here for you, whether you’re celebrating with passengers at cruising altitude or catching some rest on a layover.
